You can track your progress by comparing it against unit requirements and at every stage of your learning and study you can get support from your iTAFE mentor and advisor.

Study Guide
There are many ways that you might choose to make your way through the unit. The diagram and suggested sessions (below) will help to plan your learning through the Establish Legal and Risk Management Requirements of Small Business unit. The sessions outlined below are a suggestion only - you may have another way that you prefer to study.
Session 1 – Identify and implement business legal requirements – Purple Tiles
This includes:
* Exploring appropriate business structures
* Researching websites
* Registering for an ABN, GST, Business name
A few points to think about for your blog:
• What business structure should I start with – sole trader, partnership or company?
• Do I need to register a business name?
• Do I need any business licences?
Session 2 – Comply with legislation, codes and regulatory requirements - Green tiles
This includes:
• Researching WHS compliance
• Understanding what other regulations a business needs to address
• Record keeping, Taxation requirements
A few points to think about for your blog:
• What is a risk assessment?
• If I am a sole trader or running my business as a Partnership, can I access Workers Comp? Why not?
• What records do I need to provide the Taxation Office?
• What procedures do I need to put into place to ensure I continue compliance in my business?
• When is it necessary to understand equal employment opportunities (EEO), industrial relations, anti-discrimination, cultural differences? Why?
Session 3: Negotiate and arrange contracts – Pink tiles
This includes:
• Identify the types of contracts a business would require.
• Understand what these terms mean: royalties, copyright, patents, trademarks, registered design, intellectual property, software licences.
• Know when it would be necessary to have a contract with suppliers, landlords, agents, distributors, customers.
• Understand and identify a small business insurance requirements
A few points to think about for your blog:
• What types of contracts do you think a business would require?
• What do you think these terms mean: royalties, copyright, patents, trademarks, registered design, intellectual property, software licences?
• When do you think it would be necessary to have a contract with suppliers, landlords, agents, distributors, customers?
• What insurance requirements need to be considered – vehicle, property, public liability, professional indemnity, workers compensation?

Session 4: WHS and risk Management – also under Pink tiles
This includes:
• Review and more exploration of the Workplace Health & Safety regulations.
A few points to think about for your blog:
• Are there any specific regulations in your industry that are additional or different to other industries
• What risks do you run by not having your WHS responsibilities addressed?
• Do you need to do risk assessments if you don’t have employees? Why/why not?
